Research/​Development/​Education Biotexfuture projects showcased at Techtextil   Four partially bio-based polyamides have been successfully realised for the interior sector from the Biobase project.  Germany’s ITA group of research institutes will unveil breakthroughs in sustainability and recycling at Techtextil 2024 in Frankfurt, running from April 23-26. In one of their projects, dubbed Biobase, interior textiles crafted from biopolymers have been realized in collaboration with upholstery manufacturer Krall+Roth. This innovative endeavor involved selecting commercially available bio-based polymers, which were then transformed into filament yarns through a process of melt-spinning, air-texturizing, and subsequent fabrication into fabrics. Every step of the way, from processes to machine settings, was meticulously adapted to suit the unique characteristics of the chosen biopolymers.   Composites  Recycling carbon fibre in Salt Lake City  New set up is similar to collaboration already established in Europe.       Hexcel and Fairmat have announced a ten-year agreement to recycle carbon fibre composite materials from Hexcel’s Salt Lake City plant for reuse. Fairmat recently opened its new 15,000-square-foot recycling facility close to the Hexcel Salt Lake City site, which is home to the largest high-performance carbon fibre manufacturing facility in North America. Under the new agreement Fairmat will recycle Hexcel’s composite material scrap at its new site.
